Empowering MSMEs' growth

Under the MSME barcode subsidy scheme, micro-manufacturing enterprises can receive up to 80% reimbursement on the one-time registration fees and annual recurring fees of GS1 barcodes for the first 3 years, subject to a maximum limit of ₹50,650 only, the scheme is valid for only 100 & 1000 barcodes. With this, it is aimed to ensure that every product has a unique identity and adheres to global standards. The scheme is introduced by the Ministry of MSME and eligible enterprises can claim reimbursement by reaching out to the MSME office.

Businesses that wish to sell products through retail chains or e-marketplaces must get GS1 barcodes. In India, GS1 barcodes begin with ‘890’, and GS1 India holds exclusive rights to issue these ‘890’ barcodes. No other company can provide them to businesses.

Any company providing barcodes starting with ‘890’ operates without legal authority. The buyers as well as sellers of such unauthorised GS1 barcodes shall face legal consequences and pay applicable fines & damages. Additionally, products carrying such barcodes may face trade restrictions or challenges globally and locally, including at retailers/e-marketplaces.
