Building smarter supply chains

Know more about our history

GS1 India is a supply chain standards organisation set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry along with CII, FICCI, ASSOCHAM, BIS, APEDA, IMC, FIEO, IIP, and Spices Board India.

For over 50 years, GS1 is actively working with industry stakeholders to help them achieve supply chain visibility, transparency and interoperability, across the globe. GS1 does this with the power of barcodes.

Barcodes encode a GTIN (Global trade Item Number), providing a unique identity to every product. With a simple scan, detailed product information can be accessed by retailers/e-tailors, brand owners, solution providers, and consumers.

GS1 barcodes go beyond product labels – they talk.

Our history

Tracing our journey: where it all started

Our journey began in 1996 when the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, along with CII, FICCI, ASSOCHAM, FIEO, IMC, BIS, Spices Board, APEDA, and IIP, set up GS1 India to enable Indian businesses adopt global barcoding standards.

Since then, we are successfully fostering a culture of inclusivity and collaboration, ensuring that all businesses can access and implement global standards to drive operational excellence and market growth.
